About

My name is Frederik Brudy. I am a Principal Research Scientist at Autodesk Research Toronto.

I am a researcher in human-computer interaction (HCI), focusing on novel interaction techniques, multi-modal interaction for generative AI, and cross-device/AR/VR systems. My work explores how people collaborate and create, how technology can support creativity, and how it can better align with human cognition and experience.

My approach combines designing and building systems with empirical study. I have developed and deployed both software systems and physical computing prototypes, evaluated in lab and in-situ studies, and draw on methods such as interviews, observations, ethnography, and iterative user-centred design.

I received my PhD in Computer Science (HCI) from University College London (UCL), supervised by Nicolai Marquardt and Yvonne Rogers, and co-funded by Microsoft Research Cambridge and UCL. My dissertation examined cross-device interaction techniques, for example, moving tasks between phones and desktops or coordinating large displays with tablets, within the context of curation activities in both professional (museum) and non-professional settings.

I hold an MSc and BSc in Media Informatics from University of Munich (LMU) (2014, 2012).

I worked as researcher at UCL, where I designed tangible devices for measuring user experience and supporting artistic collaboration. During my PhD I did two research internships at Microsoft Research, Redmond, USA (2019 and 2020), collaborating with Ken Hinckley, Michel Pahud, and Bill Buxton in the EPIC Research group. I spent winter 2013/2014 at University of Calgary, working with Saul Greenberg in the Interactions Lab, and I did an internship at BMW Group Research and Technology und Technik in 2012. These experiences have shaped a trajectory that bridges academic research, industrial collaboration, and practical system building.
